Middle School “Dos” and “Don’ts”

Claire, Aly and I have some advice for the incoming middle schoolers who want to know what to do, and what not to do. Hopefully this advice will help improve your Westridge Middle School experience!

The “Dos” ——

Have a binder for each class
Bring your lunch at the beginning of the year
Charge your iPad
Remember to do your homework
Get to your locker before your top or bottom locker buddy does
Bring a snack to school
Be on time to class
Get a spot at the lunch table
Wash your PE clothes at least once a week
Be respectful to your teachers

The “Don’ts” ——
Don’t stay up too late
Don’t bring your phone to class
Don’t talk during class
Don’t break dress code
Don’t lose your work
Don’t miss too much school
Don’t be on your phone or iPad during lunch
Don’t cheat on tests or quizzes
Don’t skip breakfast
Don’t misbehave in class

Beach

Waves, seemingly quiet, crash on the shore. Over and over

Scuttling crabs dive in and out of their crab holes, crawling away from you

Silence, which was once masked by cries of laughter from the loud children, returns, creeping along, so sudden you don’t realize

Barkley

His body was tubular
And tapered
And fluffy
And as he ran outside
He barked,
And snapped at the humans
That were just out for a walk
And I saw the grey fur of old age
And a set of sharp canines’
And eyes of pitch black
Cold, and hard, and fearful
Then from the house
With a frown on her face
Calling him back without a doubt in her mind
Understanding,
Upset,
He ran back, that poor dog
Partly cold, partly confused
Partly neither— for he was just frightened

Haiku

Haiku’s are easy

But sometimes they don’t make sense

I found this Haiku online. I choes to share it because it’s funny and kind of ironic. You think it’s going to talk more about how Haiku’s can be hard to understand, but really the Haiku just ends up explaining the poet’s point. Enjoy this silly poem!

Three Austin Festivals

Whether your looking for something different or something hot, Austin has it all, and much more. One of the best things about Austin, is the awesome festivals.

Austin City Limits (ACL)

If you don’t mind a little heat, and you’re looking for a place to see your favorite bands, ACL is the place for you. Big and up-incoming bands and solo artists play at ACL every year during the summer.

Rodeo Austin is a great place for kids and adults of all ages. It has concerts, petting zoos, rides, almost anything you could think of. The rodeo is usually held in March when the weather is just getting warmer.

Kite Festival

The Kite Festival is a great place for all of your family. If you’re driving by Zilker Park on the day if the Kite Festival you will probably encounter two things. First you will probably see some pretty bad traffic, but you will also see thousands of kites in the sky, all different colors and shapes. The amazing kites will be so pretty, that you and your family will want to drop what you’re doing and take a trip to Zilker.

Lacrosse Games

On Saturday, I had three lacrosse games, but each one was twenty minutes instead of about an hour like they usually are.

I was really excited because this was my first game, since last season. I started the first game and it took me a little bit to get used to everything. But by the second game everything was back to normal, and I felt confident in playing. I played the whole time every game. Westlake won every game.

The last game was the hardest,  and it was against a team we had a kind of a ‘rivalry’ with for a long time. One of their best players that has played on their team for a long time is very aggressive and sometimes plays against the rules and try to pass it off and sportsman-like. Towards the end it looked like we might lose because one girl came down and scored 3 goals, one of which didn’t count for a violation, against our four. No one was keeping score, but I think we ended the game 4-2 in our favor.

These games were very fun, and I can’t wait to get back out on the field again!

Cooking

One cup of water, 3 cups of batter, separated! What does that even mean? Cooking is too hard!

For example last night, I made spaghetti. It only took one hour to cook, but two to recover! Pots, pans, grease, ingredients everywhere it’s just TOO much to clean!

Also, the other night I made a cake; or I thought I did. I followed the recipes exactly! I was confident I did everything right and that this dessert would turn out well. We sat down at the table, my family took a bite, and they all frowned. I don’t know how or where I went wrong, but I guess somewhere, somehow, something went south.

If you can cook, it’s great! Seems like loads of fun! But if your like me, you spend hours and hours cooking, you spend time and effort on that meal; and no one will even touch it.

Why Breakfast Is Important

It fuels you for the whole day, it can even decide how well of bad your day goes. I know you’ve heard this saying about a million times, but breakfast really IS the most important meal of the day.

First of all, you usually don’t eat ANYTHING else until lunch, especially if you’re still in school. I don’t know about you, but that’s WAY too long for me to go without food. If you don’t eat breakfast, you’ll be complaining about how hungry you are all the way until lunch. The reason you’re hungry, is your lack of breakfast this morning.

Secondly, breakfast can determine practically your whole day. If you eat something way too sugary, you’ll feel sick. If you’re eat nothing at all, you be hungry. That’s why every day you have to have a healthy wholesome breakfast.

People all around the world skip breakfast, and I bet you their days aren’t nearly as good as they could be. If YOUR day isn’t at its best, try a healthy wholesome breakfast.

Road Trips

The radio blaring the same 3 songs, giggling and chattering while you attempt to sleep with a seatbelt digging into yours side. Road Trips are the WORST.

First of all the radio is impossible to get away from! Almost every channel you flip to is playing that song you just heard 2 minutes ago. And trust me, even if it’s your favorite song, it gets SO annoying.

Then, aside from the radio, it’s next to impossible to sleep or get anything done. I can sleep with noise, but it’s more than just noise going on in that car. It’s people talking practically in your ear, and a seat belt rubbing your neck and digging in to your side, restricting most of your movement.

Finally, once you get over everything else, you deal with the radio, with the chattering, with the seatbelt. There is nowhere to go, and you have to sit safely in one spot for hours upon end! Again, I usually don’t have problems staying calm, but it’s hard to stay sane with no movement in a two to four hour trip.

In fact, I went on a road trip today with my friend Allison. It was hard to sit still, I couldn’t do any homework, I didn’t sleep, and I listened to the same song a bajillion times. But no matter what goes on in the car ride there, I’m excited to be on this trip with my friend, no matter how I got here.
