This past week, I finished the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. This is a non – fiction book and the setting takes place around the time of World War 2 for the most part, consisting of POW Camps, (Prisoner Of War Camps) in different areas of Japan. His childhood years take place in Torrance, California as well. The book is about a young boy named Louis Zamperini, who grew up in Torrance, California with 2 little sisters, an older brother, and two loving parents. As a kid, Louis was very rebellious. He stole from many, and caused mischievous trouble everywhere. As Louis got older, his troublemaker actions took a dark turn. He began hurting people, and knocking some unconscious. Louis’s older brother, Pete knew Louis needed an outlet for his anger, so Louis agreed to joining the track team at his high school. In no time, Louis was winning championships and titles. He set the high school record for a mile that would last for 19 years. He also earned a scholarship to University of Southern California. He even went to the 1936 Olympics, coming in 8th place. He was becoming more well known as an amazing runner. Though Louis’s life was calm for once, the Second World War was becoming worse, so he joined the Army Air Corps in 1943. He flew and was in charge of sending bombs down on enemy land. One fateful day, Louis and his crew were flying and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Going adrift for over 40 days with the crew members that survived, Louis barely made it. He was then captured by the Japanese and sent to a POW camp. If you would like to see if he ever is set free or even survives, I would recommend this book, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand!

On the second day of school this year, I tried out for the West Ridge volleyball team! Tryouts went through Monday and to my excitement, I made a team! From Monday to Wednesday every week we practice around 7:30-9:30 in the morning. This week, the team is very busy. On Thursday we head down to Marble Falls for a game and we have a tournament in Georgetown on Saturday and Sunday. I am really excited for the season and hope we do well. Go Wildcats!
