From My Writer’s Notebook: Dread

There you are walking through the woods. Maybe you shouldn’t have strayed away from the path for that ‘waterfall’. You should probably go back. But you’ve already come so far already.

A few minutes have passed, shouldn’t you have heard water by now? The trees are sending twisted shadows on the ground, the path disappeared a long way back. The trunks grow close together practically suffocating you. The sun has disappeared behind the canopy of leaves where’s the path? Oh no, you lost it, you stupid person, and now you’re going to pay for it.

Turn around. Look. I dare you.

Color

Color — it is so important in our lives, we use it to find areas of buildings and know when to go for traffic. What is the real importance of color in our lives??

Color is everywhere. It’s in rainbows, the sky, the grass, apples, oranges and so much more. In Lois Lowry’s The Giver, the characters live in a society where there is no color, and Jonas is one of the only ones that can see color. I think that the color symbolizes the ability to see that there’s something wrong in that society. It reminds me of the saying, “You can’t have a rainbow without a little rain,” the color shows that there’s no pain in that society but there’s also no real happiness.

I think that color is very important in our lives today, but because we are so used to it we don’t appreciate it as much as we should. How would the sky look if it wasn’t blue or if the grass wasn’t green, or if the amber waves of grain were actually just gray waves of grain?

The Lonely Chasm

Drip, drip, drip. The icy cold water drips from the stalactites hanging in the darkness above. This dark, damp, place s where the phantom of the opera lives. The pipe organ, looming above everything, the lake rarely moving, besides the little ripples from drops. And lastly, the phantom, composing his music of the night.

Dark, damp, dreary. The blackness inside the cave reflects the darkness within. As he site, composing his maniacal music . You see shadows elongating and moving around the caver. The cave, so far away from the surface that anything trapped inside may never see the light of day. As for the phantom, he may never see the light if it were staring him right in the face, so consumed is he in the night.

Last Game!!!

Today is our last game of the basketball season against Hudson Bend, and I am so excited and kinda sad. Sad because it’s our last game. Since basketball season is ending, track is starting next week, and I am really excited for that. I hope we win this game and finish our season on a good note — and we have a party tomorrow :)!!!!!!

I am really excited because track!!! I was thinking of doing either the 100 or 200 meter dash (which would be hard because so many people would be doing it) the 100 meter hurdles, the long jump, and maybe the 400 by 100 relay (if they have that in middle school).  The thing is, that all the jumps and hurdles are after school and I’m not sure if I can go. I think I can, but I don’t know. I’m also excited for track because I get to do it with more friends than the other sports. I had friends in the other sports, but I get to do track with more friends.

Another reason I  am excited (I’m so excited this month) is that I have a lot of volleyball tournaments, which is really exciting. I am excited because the first we went to was last Saturday and it was SO MUCH FUN!!!

All in all, I am so excited this month, and after this month spring break will come up!!!!!!

All-Region

In 2 weeks I have to go to Pflugerville Middle School for All-Region Choir auditions. ♪♫

I have to go to PMS (Pflugerville Middle School) on January 24. The problem is that I need to take the SAT on that day, so I get a late time slot around 2:00. Even then, it will be hard to get there. I am carpooling with my friend, Sarah, and we both are trying out. She is a soprano 1 (which is the highest part) and I am a soprano 2 (which is the lowest part).

The auditions are blind auditions, which means that the judges can’t see you and you can’t see the judges. Also the judges don’t know anybody’s name; everybody gets numbers instead. You have to learn 4 pieces (this year’s pieces are: Safe and Sound, She Sings, Aya Ngena, and Sonatemi un Balleto) then about a week from the audition they announce the 2 pieces that they will actually hear you sing. After that, like 2 days away from the audition, they tell you which part of the songs they want to hear. Finally, you audition.

We have been practicing for the competition for 2 weeks, and I really want to get in.  The hardest pieces in my opinion are Sonatemi un Balleto (it’s in italian) and She Sings.

Comment below if you have ever auditioned!!!

SSEP (Student Spaceflight Experiments Program)

This whole week in GT I was working with my group, on something called SSEP. We have to come up with an experiment that can take place in microgravity (space), on the ISS, and in this tiny thing called and FME.

First we write a 6 page proposal, which basically says, why this experiment is important and tells the astronauts what to do. Then, we make a board for our proposal which displays the proposal (kind of like a science fair), and we present that to the judges at science night. Finally if our project is picked then they send it on a shuttle to go to the ISS.

Our question was: How will microgravity affect the process of fermentation of a cucumber versus on fermentation on Earth?  We are using a type 2 FME (which means that we have 2 compartments for stuff) and one compartment will have the cucumber sliver and the other will have the salt brine (salt and water).

I have been so stressed out for the past week, because my group had not even gotten halfway done with the proposal and it was due the next day! We finished the proposal on the day it was due, now for this week we have to make our poster board.

This is what we are using.
